Travis Huckell Vice President Executive (huckellt@macewan.ca)
Travis teaches business law to students enrolled in B.Comm. and B.A. degree programs. He was admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1985 and practiced law full-time while teaching part-time until 2000 when he became a full-time instructor at MacEwan. He has interests in the use of course management software as a supplement to face-to-face classroom learning, business law, corporate law, governance of non-profit entities, and Intellectual Property.
He recently presented a paper exploring academics’ ownership of their Intellectual Property. His paper, entitled “Moral Rights and Authenticity in the Learning Process”, has been recently accepted for publication in the International Journal of Learning.
He currently sits on the Board of Directors of three non-profit organizations including the Edmonton Symphony Society and the Edmonton Concert Hall Foundation.
Shahidul Islam Vice President Faculty Welfare (islams@macewan.ca)
Shahidul is an instructor of Economics in the Department of Anthropology, Economics, and Political Science (AEPS). He received his Ph.D. in Agricultural and Resource Economics from Oregon State University. In addition to teaching, Shahidul is also involved in research, and periodically presents papers at professional society meetings. His principal areas of research are urban and spatial economics, economic education, and resource and environmental economics.
Outside of teaching and research, Shahidul is active in providing services to the Department, Faculty, and College. He is currently the Coordinator of the Economics discipline within the AEPS Department, as well as a member of the Arts Council and the Divisional Research Fund Allocation Committee. Shahidul is also a member of the Academic Governance Council.
Prior to taking on the role of Vice President Faculty Welfare with the Faculty Association, he was Treasurer for three years and a member of the Finance Committee for three years before that. In his position as Vice President Faculty Welfare, Shahidul plans to deal with all grievances in a manner consistent with the Collective Agreement.
Roy Jensen Vice President Professional Affairs (jensenrh@macewan.ca)
Dr. Roy Jensen received a Ph.D. from the University of Victoria in 2003. Roy is an instructor in the Chemistry Department, and active in college governance through the MacEwan Faculty Association, numerous college committees, and previously as vice chair of Academic Council. Dr. Jensen’s academic interest is in understanding pedagogical barriers faced by students transitioning from high school to post-secondary, with the goal to improve formal science education and societal understanding of chemistry. He is currently developing a general chemistry textbook to further these goals.
Bob Graves Treasurer (gravesj4@macewan.ca)
Bob joined the College as an Instructor in the Management Studies program in 2007. He has served as a faculty member at a number of institutions including Keyano College, University of New Brunswick (Saint John), Acadia University, and King’s College (located in Wilkes-Barre, PA). He received a B.Com. and Dip.Ed. from the University of Alberta, and M.B.A. from the University of Manitoba, and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee (Knoxville). In addition to being the Treasurer of the GMCFA, Bob is currently serving as the Treasurer for ACIFA.
Richard Godwin Vice President Negotiations (godwinr@macewan.ca)

Over the past 40 years, Richard has acted in the capacity of Legal Administrator, Controller in Industry, Auditor for Revenue Canada, Regional Audit Supervisor for the Government of Alberta, and, most significantly, operated his own Public Accounting Practice for 26 years. In addition, he sat on the Board of Governors for CGA Alberta, and was the President over the Millennium year. Richard serves on several committees, but is now concentrating his energies on passing his knowledge to students through teaching all levels of accounting and income tax.
Richard has been married for 42 years to the same lovely lady and has 2 great sons and 2 full-of-energy grandchildren – 1 boy and 1 girl. Altogether, a good life.
Chaldeans Mensah Representative on Board of Governors (mensahc@macewan.ca)
Chaldeans is the Chair of the Department of Anthropology, Economics, and Political Science at MacEwan. He received his doctorate in Political Science from the University of Alberta in 1990, and has been a faculty member with MacEwan since 1991.
A graduate of the Academy for Leadership Training and Development (Chair Academy, 2001), Chaldeans has received several awards, including the Canadian Immigration Award (1996), MacEwan Distinguished Instructor Award (1996), MacEwan Medallion (2005), Alberta Centennial Medal (2006), and Award of Distinction for Internationalizing Teaching and Learning Practice (2007).
He is a keen observer of politics at all levels, and is periodically called upon by the media to offer reflections on political developments. In his spare time, Chaldeans enjoys his work with civil society, including service on the board of the United Nations Association in Canada (UNAC – Edmonton Branch), and as Vice President (Prairies) on the national board of UNAC. As well, he serves as Treasurer on the board of the US-based National Collegiate Conference Association, a non-governmental organization associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information.
Karen Zypchyn Vice President Communications and Research (zypchynk@macewan.ca)
Karen Zypchyn is a full-time instructor in MacEwan’s Journalism program and has been teaching at the University since 2004. She possesses a M.A. in Journalism along with a M.A. in history and B.A. in history and French. During her career as a journalist, Karen reported for CBC Radio in various locations across Canada, including Sudbury, Yellowknife, Regina, and Edmonton. She also helped CTV Calgary launch the network’s first local news website.
Don Fisher Past President (fisherd@macewan.ca)
Dr. Don Fisher has been teaching in the English Department at MacEwan since 1985 and has also served on the Faculty Association Executive over the years, first as Vice President Faculty Welfare, then, most recently, as President for two terms from 2005 to 2009. For the 2009/2010 academic year, he will be serving on the Executive as Past President, a one-year term commitment primarily intended to provide support and a smoother transition for the incoming president. As Past President, he will also be responsible for drafting proposed revisions to the Faculty Association’s constitution – a particularly timely task just now as the Association continues to evolve to keep pace with the ongoing, significant changes at MacEwan, particularly those in governance structure.
