Information for Chairs
Program and department chairs are members of the GMUFA, and have the same right to representation as any other member. You also have the same responsibility to uphold the Code of Professional Conduct.
Chairs have specific workload conditions and a different appeals process from other GMUFA members. These are covered by article 18 of the collective agreement.
As chair, you are expected to work with your faculty members to prepare their annual workload expectations. As faculty members, chairs do not have the authority to act as managers/supervisors. You cannot be asked to take part in disciplining other faculty members, and you do not have the final authority on hiring decisions. These managerial functions remain with the dean or director of your area.
Faculty with concerns about Chairs
Your program/department chair is a member of the GMUFA as well. There are specific expectations on all faculty members under the Code of Professional Conduct. If you have concerns, we can assist you and your chair to resolve your issues in a respectful and confidential manner.
Although your chair may have some administrative duties as part of her or his role as chair, she or he does not have managerial authority – your chair cannot discipline you or direct your workload. Only deans and directors have this managerial function.
